Sweet Potato Casserole –  a southern classic that is sweet and creamy topped with crunchy buttery pecan brown sugar and toasted gooey mini marshmallows. A must-have holiday side dish or as dessert. Simply delightful!

There’s nothing as comforting as the smell of cinnamon, the sweetness of mashed sweet potatoes and toasted marshmallows especially this time of the year.

That distinct smell is so uplifting and much more when you have scoops of it. I must say, it’d definitely be competing with the Roasted Turkey and Green Bean Casserole on your plate.

Don’t worry, you’re not alone. I do feel that way too when there’s just too many scrumptious dishes on the holiday table. But I got to be honest that this Southern classic here always gets the first bite.

That creamy smooth texture, sweetness, added with the warmth of cinnamon and nutmeg is a feast on your palate. It’s indeed a holiday staple!

And it’s a cinch to make. You just have to bake the sweet potatoes and mash them up until smooth. Then add all the ingredients and spices, mix and transfer to the baking dish.

You could totally enjoy this casserole at that state. But why not top it to add some texture? You can go for a buttery crunchy pecan brown sugar topping or some toasty gooey mini marshmallows. Or simply have both!

It’s the season to be jolly, so just indulge heartily and go all out!

This can be enjoyed warm or pre-make and add the topping the next day. You’d seriously want extra scoops of this perfect holiday side or dessert.

Happy holidays, everyone!

Tips and Notes:

  1.  Aside from baking, you can also boil the sweet potatoes in a dutch oven with enough water to cover the surface of the potatoes and bring to a boil. Do  a fork testing to check if its tender.
  2. Use a metal potato masher to do the mashing. This yields smoother result without any lumps.
  3. To make ahead, prepare the sweet potato mixture and tightly cover it with a plastic wrap and store in the fridge up to 3-4 days. You can also prepare the topping mixture ahead in a separate bowl, cover and refrigerate.
  4. When ready to serve, take out the sweet potato mixture about 30 minutes before baking, then add the toppings and bake as directed.
