I’m Obsessed With Tiny Things That Hold Other Tiny Things and Here are 11 of Them

Fashion

I own three planters and not a single plant. I have two ashtrays but I don’t smoke. On my bookshelf sits seven various bowls and trays holding miscellaneous crap that ranges from dimes to jewelry to cut off clothing tags from bought-in-bulk underwear. And crammed amongst these is a purely decorative commemorative plate celebrating the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton. That one sits upright—it holds nothing.

My minor obsession with bowls, boxes, planters, and trays likely stems from a hoarder’s version of organization. These tiny home goods are simultaneously purposeful and useless. I should also mention that I felt personally attacked by SNL.

Anyway, it’s difficult for me to narrow down all the types of vessels I love, but below are the trending styles we can enjoy together. (And yes, they are named “vessels” now. That is what this Hot Potter from Instagram calls them, and Hot Potter has wet, clay hands. We trust him.)

Pink: “We’re not broken, just bent”

Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold, is symbolic of treating breakage and repair as something beautiful. Cool. I’m not wholly convinced it’s a real ancient practice or another Etsy scam, but I want it.

A side table’s sole purpose is to exist as a flat surface to display something that displays something else. It’s called interior design. Look it up.

Fancy a valet tray.

Do you pronounce “valet” with a hard T like they do on Downton Abbey? Are you posh if you get it monogrammed?

The Final Boss

Much like Aesop soap in a restaurant’s bathroom, an Hermes tray is an indicator of a bougie environment. It’s the ultimate stage of holding things. Maybe I’ve been lured by its high price point into assuming it is actually worth it, but look! It’s so adorable you forget it’s even an ashtray. With its gilded indents, it tastefully reminds you that its intended function is to catch the burnt embers from all those socially-related cancer sticks. In my dream future I no longer smoke—the power of Hermes!—and this porcelain treasure houses pink Starbursts. One day.
