Your Favorite Candle Brand Makes Bags Too

Byredo may have a cult following of fragrances, candles, and body care products, but did you know they also sell some pretty amazing leather goods? Quietly launched in 2015, the collection started with a large assortment of handbags, wallets, clutches, and card holders. “I was inspired by travel when I started working with leather,” says Byredo designer Ben Gorham. “I was making small leather goods, many of them relating to bringing your beauty products with you. I quickly got into larger pieces like travel bags and luggage and since then I have created more functional bags for daily use.”

Two years later, Gorham’s decided to add seasonal capsule collections to the mix. For the first one, named “Accelerated Culture” and presented late last month at Paris Fashion Week, Gorham found inspiration in Craig McDean’s I Love Fast Cars, a book featuring photos of cars and drag strips throughout the Bible Belt region of the US.

“Beyond my personal fascination with American muscle cars , Craig’s book captured the culture surrounding racing in the southern states in a beautiful way,” says Gorham. The bold yellows, crisp silvers, and oil-slick finishes spotted through the collection are a clear nod to these photos.

Though this collection may seem like a left turn away from typical Byredo pieces, Gorham knows what he’s doing. “My idea has really been to create a few styles and functions that transcend seasons and trends,” says the designer. “The “Accelerated Culture” capsule collection with Craig McDean was a bit of a side step but I had a super clear idea of what I wanted to say.”
