11 Best Liquid and Powder Foundation 2017

“I’m not a foundation person,” is how a lot of us at ELLE preface our foundation picks. Blame BB creams, tinted moisturizers, and no-makeup makeup on the runway, but there’s a recent reluctance to come out as daily foundation wearers. But who doesn’t like a little make-believe? Let’s play pretend-perfect-skin with ELLE’s favorite foundations, ahead.

Perricone MD No Foundation Foundation Serum SPF 30

You know how on that one day you don’t wear makeup, someone decides to be that person who asks if you’re sick? Well I try to circumvent that whole situation by making “sick” be my everyday look. Hence, I don’t wear a ton of makeup. But I’m

not immune to liking a blotch-free face, so on fancier days I use this product that combines the coverage of foundation with the power a serum. It gives you subtly perfect skin with the added benefit of Vitamin C, which helps even out skin tone.

Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation

I’ve never been a foundation girl, but have dabbled with all types, brands, formulations, etc. My biggest complaint is the coverage is too much coverage–looking made-up is never the goal. This is super light and goes on and wears the most like a tinted moisturizer. I think it enhances my skin and lets it look like the best version of itself (something I’ve always assumed is the goal of foundation, yet could never find). — Leah Chernikoff, Editorial Director

Stila Illuminating Liquid Foundation

I really never wear foundation, I usually find it too heavy—and, let’s be honest too much effort to apply. But on the very rare occasion I do use it, I go with this Stila foundation a makeup artist once used on me that inspired a lot of compliments about my “great, glowy” skin. Really, thinking back to those compliments, perhaps I should rethink my lazy stance on this… — Sally Holmes, Deputy Editor

I LITERALLY (like, literally, for real, not in an exaggerated girl sort of way) get compliments on it each and every single time I wear it. It really is lightweight, unlike other brands. I never feel like my pores are being clogged by a heavy, oily product. It just evens out my skin tone for a look that feels like a more polished version of my natural self. — Nikki Ogunnaike, Senior Fashion Editor

Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra 24H

Lately, a few makeup artists have told me, ‘what nice skin I have’ like I’m a latter incarnation of little red riding hood. What they don’t know is that I’m already wearing this stuff. It evens out my blotchy skin, feels smooth, and lasts. — Chloe Schama, Executive Editor

Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation

Unless someone else is there to apply it, I almost never wear foundation. First, I’m lazy. Second, I consider foundation to be the Spanx of the cosmetics world. Sure, it makes you look good. But wouldn’t you rather breathe? However! When I need to get dressed for only the most special occasions, I have started to depend on this Koh Gen Do formula. It goes on like a damn dream and stays in place for hours. It’s a revelation. — Mattie Kahn, News Editor

Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

I’m extremely picky with foundations (especially given my acne-prone skin), but this often-recommended formula finally made it’s way into my beauty bag last summer and I have been a believer since. Unlike most liquid foundations, it doesn’t leave me feeling greasy at the end of the day and gives really full coverage with just a tiny drop. — Kristina Rodulfo, Associate Editor

bareMinerals Matte Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15

I’ve been using BareMinerals products since high school—I had acne then, and it didn’t break out my skin the way some other brands do. I still use it today because I love its effects (solid coverage from a light powder). I switched to their matte version because my skin tends to be oily in the summer. It keeps the shine down. Truly a solid, essential product in my makeup kit that has held up for years. — Alyssa Bailey, Assistant Editor
